Frequently Asked Questions
Period underwear provides protection during menstruation. It consists of underwear with four layers in the gusset designed to absorb discharge, keep you dry, and prevent leaks. Waterproof PUL fabric, for example, is used for the latter function. Period underwear is worn like regular underwear and is soft and comfortable. Period underwear is designed to be worn on its own. You therefore do not need to use an additional sanitary pad or tampon. Period underwear is breathable and supports a natural, healthy menstrual cycle. It is made from hypoallergenic fabrics, and there is no longer a risk of toxic shock syndrome, as can be the case when using tampons or menstrual cups. Period underwear also helps reduce minor urinary leaks, perspiration, and intermittent hormonal discharge. So you always feel secure. Do you have any other questions? Email info@moi-et-marie.com.
Before first use, it is recommended to wash the underwear twice to ensure optimal absorbency. Hand-wash in cold water or machine-wash. Do not use detergent, and air-dry.
Wear the briefs like any other “normal” pair of underwear. Put them on under your usual clothing—pants, dresses, whatever you like. You can wear them for up to 12 hours. In the evening, when you get home from work or school, wash the briefs and put on a new pair.
First, choose your target group. Are you looking for panties for teenagers or women? From the list of briefs, choose your favorite style. We offer hipster panties, low- and high-rise briefs, seamless briefs, comfortable briefs with an elastic waistband, and more. Each product description includes sizing advice so you can make your choice with confidence. You will also find more information to help you determine whether the briefs are suitable for normal, moderate to heavy, or heavy discharge.

Not at all! Simply put on the underwear. There is no need to put washable sanitary pads or anything else inside the period underwear. Just wash it twice before first use (with a mild detergent at 40 degrees and let it air-dry), then put it on. Your soft bamboo or organic cotton underwear provides complete protection and absorbs up to the equivalent of three tampons.
Machine-wash your briefs in cold water (40°C) with a mild detergent (not too heavily scented, as this can cause irritation), but do not use fabric softener afterward. Then let them air-dry (do not tumble-dry). Traveling? In that case, you can hand-wash the briefs in cold water. You can also use our eco-friendly detergent wipes. Then air-dry them, and you're all set.
It isn’t always easy for young girls who have just started their periods to use sanitary pads or tampons. At school, changing them can be difficult. They have to make sure no one notices when they take the product out of their schoolbag, etc. (which, incidentally, makes a lot of noise). In addition, they may feel a little “different” because they are using a thick pad or tampon. Period underwear helps solve this problem; it has a lovely design and is incredibly comfortable. Because it fits snugly, they don’t have to worry, even when playing sports. It’s good for their self-confidence, the environment, and Mom’s wallet 😉. What’s more, there is no risk of toxic shock syndrome as there is with tampons or menstrual cups.
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t get soaked by your own flow when you wear period underwear. The top layer of the gusset is breathable and dries very quickly. The airy fabric allows liquid to flow rapidly into the underwear, so the surface feels dry. The liquid is thus wicked away, collected, and held by the absorbent fabric underneath. In addition, unlike internal protection such as menstrual cups or tampons, period underwear allows blood to flow freely, so it is not held in the vagina, which is the main cause of bacterial growth. A difficult term for “toxic shock syndrome,” made a little more familiar.
There is no need to change your briefs unless you want to. Most briefs can be worn for 10 hours, so you can easily change them at home after school or work. Their absorbency has been tested to ensure that you can wear your briefs safely, so you will not feel uncomfortable after wearing them for an extended period.
The fabrics were selected for their hygienic properties. Bamboo fiber is even a natural antibacterial agent. The briefs are also made from breathable organic fabrics and have an Oeko-Tex STANDARD 100 certification. Even after 10 hours, the underwear remains hygienic and odor-free. They therefore have nothing in common with sanitary pads, which are made of 80% plastic and consequently also harbor bacteria and contribute to odors.
It is an investment at first, but unlike sanitary pads or tampons, period underwear is reusable and can last up to 7 years. One pair can replace 2,275 tampons* (over 7 years). Period underwear therefore genuinely allows you to save money in the medium term (*disposable protection saved => 5 tampons per day for 5 days per period, 13 times a year, over 7 years = €637 saved).
After receiving your package, try on the underwear with a pad. The period underwear should fit snugly while remaining very comfortable. If the underwear is too tight, you can exchange it free of charge (provided it has not been used). In West Flanders, where we live, menstruation or one’s period was called “Aunt Marie.” We would say, “Aunt Marie is visiting,” to refer to a period. There is no source confirming this, but “Marie” probably refers to “Mary Beatrice Kenner.” In 1956, she invented a menstrual belt, the “sanitary belt,” in the United States. It was a kind of belt worn around the hips and between the legs to hold menstrual pads in place. In a way, it was period underwear before its time. Marie and Me is therefore also an ode to this creator who put women’s comfort first!
