Here’s how to wash your menstrual underwear so it lasts for years.

Menstrual underwear: a sustainable investment for your comfort and your wallet.
But for your menstrual underwear or your swim underwear to last for years, proper care is essential.
How to wash it without damaging the absorbent layers? What to do before first use? And how to react if you notice a stain?
In this comprehensive guide, we share everything you need to know to keep your menstrual underwear in perfect condition.
From simple washing tips to stain treatment, this guide will help you keep your underwear fresh, functional, and ready for every cycle.

Washing: the basics

Washing your menstrual underwear is easier than you think, but there are some golden rules to maximize their lifespan and performance.
Follow these steps and your underwear will stay like new.

Step 1: Rinse first with cold water

After use, it is important to rinse your underwear as quickly as possible with cold water.
This removes blood and other discharge before they embed in the fabric.
Hold it under running water until the water runs clear, or let it soak for a few minutes in a basin of cold water.
Why cold? Hot water can "set" blood proteins into the fabric, making stains harder to remove.

💡 Tip: Traveling? Slip the underwear into a sealed laundry bag and rinse it later. Your bag will stay clean and fresh.

Step 2: Machine wash at a maximum of 40°C

After rinsing, you can machine wash your underwear on a delicate cycle at a maximum of 40°C.
Use a mild, fragrance-free detergent to avoid irritation and protect the absorbent layers.
Avoid harsh products like fabric softener, bleach, or vinegar, which can damage waterproofness and absorbency.

For extra protection, wash your menstrual underwear in a laundry bag.
This prevents them from tangling or getting damaged by zippers or buttons.
Wash them with your usual laundry (underwear, towels), but avoid overloading the machine.

Step 3: Air dry

Always air dry your underwear, for example on a drying rack.
This protects the elastics and the waterproof layer, which are sensitive to high temperatures.
If you still use a tumble dryer, choose a gentle program and avoid hot air.

Why avoid heat?
High temperatures can damage the waterproof layer (PUL), which reduces waterproofness.
Air drying is therefore better for your underwear... and for the planet.

💡 Travel tip: Moi et Marie ECO laundry wipes.
No washing machine available? Dissolve half a wipe in water, wash your underwear by hand, rinse, and let dry.

First use: prepare your underwear

A new menstrual underwear is a gift... but before wearing it, an essential step is required.

Why pre-wash?
You need to wash the underwear twice before wearing it to "activate" the absorbent layers.
This increases their absorption capacity, a bit like a new towel that dries better after a few washes.

How to do it?

  • First wash: by hand in cold water or in the machine at a maximum of 40°C with a mild detergent. No fabric softener.

  • Complete air drying.

  • Second wash and dry in the same way.

After this step, the underwear is ready to be worn and guarantees you optimal protection.

And for swim panties? Same principle!
Wash them twice before soaking. After each swim, rinse them with cold water to remove chlorine or salt.

Preventing and treating stains

Discoloration can happen, especially if you can’t rinse immediately.
Don’t worry: this does not affect the hygiene or effectiveness of your menstrual panty.

Prevention:
Always rinse with cold water as soon as possible. You can also let it soak for half an hour.

If a stain persists:

  • Soak for several hours in cold water with a little mild detergent.

  • Use an enzymatic stain remover suitable for delicate fabrics (test first on a small area).

  • Avoid heat, which would set the stain.

Note that slight discoloration is normal after heavy use. It’s proof that your panty is working for you.

A sustainable choice

With proper care, a menstrual panty can last up to 7 years.
It’s therefore a comfortable, economical, and eco-friendly choice.
