Menstrual Underwear: a lasting investment in your comfort and your wallet.
But for your period underwear or your period swimwear to last for years, proper care is essential.
How do you wash it without damaging the absorbent layers? What should you do before first use? And how should you react if you notice a stain?
In this comprehensive guide, we share everything you need to know to keep your menstrual Underwear in perfect condition.
From simple washing tips to treating discoloration, this guide will help you keep your underwear fresh, functional, and ready for every cycle.
Washing: the basics
Washing your period underwear is simpler than you think, but there are a few golden rules to maximize its lifespan and performance.
Follow these steps and your underwear will stay like new.
Step 1: Rinse first in cold water
After use, it is important to rinse your underwear in cold water as soon as possible.
This removes blood and other discharge before they become embedded in the fabric.
Hold it under running water until the water runs clear, or let it soak for a few minutes in a basin of cold water.
Why cold water? Hot water can “set” blood proteins into the fabric and make stains more difficult to remove.
💡 Tip: Traveling? Place the underwear in an airtight wash bag and rinse it later. Your bag will stay clean and fresh.
Step 2: Machine-wash at a maximum of 40°C
After rinsing, you can machine-wash your underwear on a delicate cycle at a maximum of 40°C.
Use a mild, fragrance-free detergent to prevent irritation and protect the absorbent layers.
Avoid harsh products such as fabric softener, bleach, or vinegar, which can damage the waterproofing and absorbency.
For extra protection, wash your period underwear in a laundry bag.
This prevents them from tangling or being damaged by zippers or buttons.
Wash them with your regular laundry (underwear, towels), but avoid overloading the machine.
Step 3: Air-dry
Always air-dry your underwear, for example on a drying rack.
This protects the elastic and waterproof layer, which are sensitive to high temperatures.
If you use a tumble dryer anyway, choose a gentle cycle and avoid hot air.
Why avoid heat?
High temperatures can damage the waterproof layer (PUL), reducing its leakproofness.
Air-drying is therefore better for your underwear… and for the planet.
💡 Travel tip: ECO laundry sheets from Moi et Marie.
No washing machine available? Dissolve half a laundry sheet in water, hand-wash your underwear, rinse, and leave it to dry.
First use: prepare your period underwear
New period underwear is a gift… but before wearing it, one essential step is required.
Why pre-wash?
You need to wash the underwear twice before wearing it, to “activate” the absorbent layers.
This increases their absorbency, much like a new towel dries better after a few washes.
How do you do it?
-
First wash: by hand in cold water or in the washing machine at a maximum of 40 °C with a mild detergent. Do not use fabric softener.
-
Dry completely in the open air.
-
Second wash and drying in the same way.
After this step, the period underwear is ready to wear and provides optimal protection.
What about period swim briefs? Same principle!
Wash them twice before taking a dip. After each swim, rinse them with cold water to remove chlorine or salt.
Preventing and treating stains
Discoloration can occur, especially if you can’t rinse immediately.
Don’t panic: this affects neither the hygiene nor the effectiveness of your period underwear.
Prevention:
Always rinse with cold water as soon as possible. You can also soak it for half an hour.
If a stain persists:
-
Soak for several hours in cold water with a little mild detergent.
-
Use an enzymatic stain remover suitable for delicate fabrics (test it first on a small area).
-
Avoid heat, as it can set the stain.
Please note that slight discoloration is normal after intensive use. It’s proof that your period underwear is working for you.
